Examining Fentanyl Abuse in Hennepin County

Fentanyl Addiction

Fentanyl addiction and overdose is an epidemic in Minnesota.

Fentanyl is between 50 and 100 times stronger than morphine, and frequently prescribed to treat chronic pain. But most batches of fentanyl available on the streets is being manufactured overseas in labs and offering inconsistent potency levels — increasing the risk for overdose deaths. Since fentanyl is often less costly than heroin, the drug is being added to heroin and sold to unknowing addicts.

Hennepin County saw 18 overdoses from January to September that were caused by fentanyl, which is double the amount the county saw for the entire calendar year of 2015. Heroin has caused 49 overdose deaths in the county during that same time period, compared to 48 total overdose deaths in 2015.

In addition to seizing batches of the deadly opioid during the raid, law enforcement seized marijuana, several guns, and other illegal prescription drugs. In October, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy named Hennepin County a high-intensity drug trafficking area and gave the county extra federal resources to combat local drug crimes. The raid was conducted by the Bloomington SWAT team, with help from the Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force.

Treating Fentanyl Addiction at Drug Rehab Centers

Many individuals struggle with overcoming opioid addiction on their own due to the way these drugs alter brain chemistry. According to experts, fentanyl causes users to develop a high tolerance relatively quickly, and influences them to take higher doses with each use. This increases the risk for overdose, coma, and/or death.

But drug rehab centers offer unique treatments and programs that help addicts successfully overcome physical dependence and addiction. For instance, opioid addicts who want to get clean immediately can undergo detoxification at an inpatient rehab center, while those who want to overcome dependence gradually without experiencing cravings and withdrawal symptoms can go to rehab centers that offer medication-assisted treatments. Fortunately, rehab centers offer several treatments that can be customized and tailored to each patient’s unique, individual needs.

Minnesota drug rehab centers can help drug offenders and addicts achieve lifelong sobriety, which improves their personal overall health and well-being, and gives them another chance to fulfill their life goals. Connecting drug offenders and addicts with addiction treatment also helps improve public safety across local communities. Drug rehab centers not only treat opioid dependence, but underlying causes of addiction using a combination of therapy and counseling.
