Facing Opioid Abuse in Minneapolis Suburbs
In nearby Bloomington, three more individuals suffered opioid overdoses at the Mall of America. Victims inside the mall included a man and woman in their mid-30s, and a third individual found outside the mall at a traffic stop. Deputy Police Chief Mike Hartley says investigators determined that all three victims had been abusing opioids together before suffering their overdoses at the mall.
A total of 216 people died from prescription opioid overdoses in the state last year, while another 114 people died from illegal opioids such as heroin, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Earlier this year, the Obama administration announced Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week to recognize the importance of making Americans aware of this deadly crisis.
Treating Opioid Addiction at Drug Rehab Centers
Heroin is sometimes mixed with synthetic opioids that are less costly than heroin and up to thousands of times more potent. Many addicts who overdose on heroin often don’t know they’re using heroin cut or laced with deadly opioids such as fentanyl or carfentanil. This can lead to an overdose or death, especially when opioid antidote drugs fail to revive victims who have taken large doses of high-potency opioids.
The most ideal way to avoid death by overdose is to seek treatment at a drug rehab center that specializes in opioid addiction. Drug rehab centers offer treatments designed to help addicts detox and overcome dependence on opioids in safe, therapeutic environments. Individuals who struggle with heroin and opioid addiction often cannot achieve lasting sobriety on their own due to the highly addictive nature of drugs in this drug class.
In addition to helping opioid addicts overcome dependence, drug rehab centers in Minnesota offer counseling and therapy sessions aimed at identifying and addressing underlying causes of addiction. For instance, those who suffer from addiction on behalf of co-occurring disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder can have this condition treated at the same time as addiction. Following rehab treatment, recovering heroin addicts can re-enter society feeling sober, healthier, and educated on how to avoid relapse and stay opioid-free.
